Brendan of Birr

About Brendan of Birr
Brendan of Birr belongs to the early Irish monastic tradition, but the surviving biographical record is sparse. The Dictionary of Irish Biography says that little can be established and that no trace survives of his monastery at Birr in County Offaly. It reports that later tradition said he studied at Clonard. The entry separates this Brendan from Brendan of Clonfert, whose better-known voyage tradition belongs to another person.Adomnán's Life of Columba portrays Brendan as a friend of Columba. It says Brendan greeted Columba with the kiss of peace when he arrived at the synod of Tailtiu and defended him against the gathering's decision. The Dictionary of Irish Biography cites this account as Vita Columbae, Book III, chapter 3. This is a hagiographic account written after the events, so it is presented here as a report of Brendan's early medieval memory rather than as an independently verified scene. The same Life of Columba says that, when Brendan was dying, Columba saw angels coming to meet his soul and asked that a special Mass be celebrated. The Dictionary of Irish Biography connects this account with Vita Columbae, Book III, chapter 11. The episode records a religious tradition about Brendan's death, not a securely recoverable historical detail. The DIB gives November 29 as his feast day.
