About Brocard
Brocard is remembered in Carmelite tradition as a leader of the hermits on Mount Carmel. The church biography identifies him as a Frenchman who succeeded Berthold as prior.
Around 1207 he asked Albert, the Latin patriarch of Jerusalem, to provide a rule for the community. The rule described a shared life of obedience, prayer, fasting, silence and manual work, while the hermits retained separate dwellings.
Details of Brocard’s personal life are scarce, and the entry’s account of the prior’s death mistakenly calls its subject Berthold. His remembered importance lies in the Carmelite account of requesting a stable form of life for the community.
