Biography
Ciarán of Clonmacnoise

About Ciarán of Clonmacnoise
Ciarán is remembered as the founder of the monastery at Clonmacnoise in sixth-century Ireland. The surviving Latin and Irish Lives took shape long after his lifetime, so stories about his training, travels, miracles, and exact chronology should be presented as monastic tradition rather than independently established biography. The modern site’s archaeological remains and institutional history show the lasting importance of Clonmacnoise, but later buildings and manuscripts should not be attributed to Ciarán personally. The Irish Catholic Proper commemorates him on September 9; that observance does not establish his death date.
