Clotilde

Portrait of Clotilde

About Clotilde

Clotilde was a Burgundian princess who became the queen of Clovis I. Most details of her life come from Gregory of Tours, writing decades later; his account presents her as a Christian influence on Clovis but is not a neutral transcript, and a contemporary letter by Avitus confirms Clovis’s baptism without mentioning Clotilde. Gregory says that after Clovis’s death she lived at Tours, supported churches and monasteries, and remained involved in dynastic politics. His account also includes the killing of two grandsons, complicating its otherwise exemplary portrait. Gregory places her death at Tours and burial in Paris but does not establish an exact death year.
