Portrait of Corbinian

About Corbinian

Corbinian is remembered as an early bishop associated with Freising. His principal life was written decades later by Arbeo, another bishop of Freising, and survives incompletely. Arbeo portrays Corbinian seeking solitude, travelling to Rome, serving around Freising, and withdrawing to Mais after a conflict at the ducal court; these are retrospective hagiographic reports rather than independently corroborated episodes. The *Life* places his death at Freising and burial at Mais, but historians treat exact dates cautiously. The familiar story of a bear carrying his baggage belongs to a later expanded version, not Arbeo’s original account. The archdiocese commemorates the translation of his relics on November 20 as a local observance.
