About Dionysius of Alexandria

Dionysius led the church of Alexandria in the third century and left letters that survive chiefly in quotations by Eusebius. Those fragments record his correspondence, pastoral decisions, and experiences during the Decian and Valerian persecutions, including exile; he survived those persecutions. The OCA nevertheless commemorates him under the liturgical title “Hieromartyr”. Eusebius gives a death range of 264–265, so no exact year or death place is supplied here. The Orthodox Church in America commemorates him on October 5; the catalog’s February 9 source mentions him only in another saint’s account, and a current Roman Catholic feast remains unverified.
