About Eusebius of Rome

Eusebius is remembered as the founder of the Roman church known as the titulus Eusebii. The church’s commemoration of its founder is the firmer core of his veneration.

The later Acts describe him as a priest who challenged Pope Liberius and died in imprisonment.

That narrative contains serious historical difficulties and is generally judged wholly or partly fabricated. It cannot establish his supposed confrontation, imprisonment or death date.

His August 14 commemoration belongs to local and special calendars after the reform of 1969. The story of the church’s founder should be distinguished from the unreliable dramatic life.
