Portrait of Exuperius

About Exuperius

The Roman Martyrology calls the father Exuperius; the Greek passion and the Orthodox Church in America call him Hesperus. The BHG repertory identifies one passion for Hesperus, Zoe, and their sons Cyriacus and Theodulus, matching the same May 2 family commemoration. The story’s slavery, refusal of pagan food, and martyrdom belong to that received passion and are not independently established by the later calendar notices. Keep Exuperius/Hesperus as name variants for this group identity, and treat the narrative as tradition.
