Fabian of Rome

Portrait of Fabian of Rome

About Fabian of Rome

Fabian of Rome led the Roman church from 236 until 250. The Holy See lists him as its twentieth pope and identifies Rome as his birthplace. His birth year is not established by that chronology; its firm outline concerns his years as bishop.

Eusebius of Caesarea tells a striking story about his election. Fabian had come from the countryside and was not among the people initially considered for the office. According to the reported tradition, a dove settled on his head, and those assembled acclaimed him as bishop. This is the remembered election story, not an eyewitness description of a verified miracle.

A quieter trace of his position appears in Eusebius's account of Origen's correspondence. Origen wrote to Fabian about his own orthodoxy. The reference places Rome's bishop within the theological exchanges of the wider church, although it does not preserve Fabian's answer.

After his death, Cyprian wrote to the Roman clergy. News of their bishop's end had first reached him uncertainly, then a letter delivered by the subdeacon Crementius confirmed it. Cyprian praised the integrity of the bishop's administration and the honorable conclusion of his life. This contemporary response offers a brief but substantial testimony to the regard in which the departed bishop was held. It remembers his conduct in office as well as his final witness.

Eusebius records Fabian's martyrdom at Rome under Decius. The historian supplies no detailed account here of the manner of death.

His burial remains part of the history of the Roman church. The Catacombs of Saint Callixtus identify his original Greek inscription among those surviving in the Crypt of the Popes. This material memorial belongs alongside the literary testimony: a name preserved in the communal burial place, rather than a richly documented personal life.
