Fanchea

About Fanchea
Fanchea is remembered as the foundress of a community of women at Rossory near Lough Erne. Irish tradition associates her closely with Enda of Aran.
The stories of their early lives are not historical records. They give Fanchea a guiding role in Enda’s decision to leave warfare for monastic life.
A later account places her final community at Killaine near Mount Bregh. The dates assigned to her death differ substantially.
Her January 1 commemoration preserves her memory as a woman religious. The disputed family narratives and chronology do not support a detailed reconstruction of her personal life.
