About Front of Perigueux

Front is honored as patron of the Diocese of Périgueux and Sarlat. The diocese acknowledges that the later accounts of his life do not establish when he lived or whether he was a bishop. It recalls older references to him as a confessor, a saint remembered for his Christian witness.

One early account comes from the Life of Géry of Cambrai, which describes a visit to Front’s tomb. Jean-Claude Ignace cautions that this attests the cult at the time the biography was written, probably late in the seventh century; it does not independently establish a pilgrimage to Périgueux around 600. In the story, Géry’s journey to the region concerned property belonging to his church.

The diocesan account also points to Front’s commemoration by Raban Maur in the ninth century and to a visitor from Ripoll in 1008 who mentioned his resting place. These references preserve the history of his veneration more clearly than the events of his lifetime.

The legends grew more elaborate over time. Robert Amiet compares five versions of the Life, beginning with an eighth-century account and continuing through later rewritings. He shows how material about Fronton, a monk of the Egyptian desert, was adapted to Front of Périgueux. A story about camels bringing food to hungry monks consequently became part of the local saint’s narrative.

Other versions brought Front into the company of Saint Peter and eventually made him a disciple of Christ. Amiet treats these as literary developments, not a reliable itinerary or chronology. The competing accounts cannot supply secure dates, family relationships or journeys for a historical biography.

Even the image of Front as a hermit may owe something to the Egyptian story, Ignace observes. His conclusion leaves the saint’s lifetime and precise role unresolved. The durable evidence is the devotion attached to his name and tomb, rather than a continuous record of his life.
