About Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows

Francesco Possenti was born in Assisi in 1838. The Passionists describe him as a lively young man whose family losses and illness shaped his religious discernment. He entered their congregation at eighteen and took the name Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows. The change of name marked a new religious life centered on Christ's Passion and devotion to Mary.

Gabriel spent only a few years in the Passionist community. The order remembers his cheerful character, prayer, and fidelity to ordinary religious duties. These descriptions come from the community that preserves his memory; they should not be expanded into invented conversations or unverified wonders. He was still preparing for priesthood when tuberculosis ended his life on 27 February 1862 at Isola del Gran Sasso.

The Catholic Church canonized Gabriel in 1920. The Passionists keep his feast on February 27, the date of his death. His short life is remembered within the order as a witness to religious commitment before ordination, without needing to assign him a priestly office or an unsupported miracle narrative.
