About Gabriel-Taurin Dufresse

Gabriel-Taurin Dufresse was a French missionary priest who reached China through Macao and began work in Sichuan. His responsibilities brought him into contact with dispersed Catholic communities, and persecution repeatedly interrupted his ministry. Arrest, escape, and exile were followed by a return to pastoral work.

As a bishop, he convened a Sichuan synod in 1803 to discuss church teaching and missionary practice. Renewed persecution eventually led to his arrest and death in Chengdu in 1815. The Holy See dates his death to 14 September 1815.
