Biography
Gerontius of Cervia

About Gerontius of Cervia
Gerontius is venerated at Cagli as a bishop and martyr, traditionally identified with a bishop of Cervia, formerly Ficocle. His patronage encompasses Cagli and its historical diocese. Tradition places his killing near Cagli on a return journey from Rome.
The Bollandist commentary is cautious about that identification and about the death story. It notes that the author of the later legend did not know Gerontius’s origins, the circumstances of his appointment, or the rulers under whom he lived. The editor also challenges the claim that followers of the rival pope Laurentius killed him. A violent death and subsequent veneration do not, by themselves, establish the attackers’ religious motive.
The same commentary preserves Francesco Bricchi’s account of devotion at the chapel associated with the killing. It records invocations against headaches and toothache. These are historical reports of belief, not evidence of medical efficacy.
His place in Cagli’s public worship remains visible. In 2023, the diocesan newspaper reported a May 9 Mass at the co-cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, celebrated by Bishop Armando with civic representatives and local worshippers. A procession then went to the church associated with the saint, accompanied by the town band.
The diocesan pastoral calendar lists May 9 as the feast of Gerontius, bishop and martyr, and names him a patron of the Diocese of Fano Fossombrone Cagli Pergola.
