About Giustino Russolillo

Giustino Maria Russolillo was born on 18 January 1891 in Pianura, a suburb of Naples. He was one of ten children. At ten he entered the seminary at Pozzuoli, then pursued theological studies at Posillipo in Naples. The Holy See's biographical booklet describes a childhood marked by prayer and notes the influence of his paternal aunts; these are details of the Church's retrospective account rather than independent testimony of his inner life.

At his ordination in 1913, Russolillo hoped to found a community devoted to vocations. On 30 April 1914 he tried communal life with young men at his parents’ house, though that first group did not last. In 1920 he renewed the effort as pastor in Pianura. The Vocationist Fathers mark 18 October 1920 as their founding date.

Russolillo was drafted and sent to a war zone. According to the Holy See's account, seeing sisters care for wounded soldiers contributed to his plan for a women's congregation. While serving as pastor in Pianura in 1920–21, he founded the Vocationist Fathers and the Sisters of Divine Vocations. He also supported the beginnings of a secular institute, the Vocationist Apostles of Universal Sanctification. The separate foundations widened his response to people seeking to serve in different forms of Christian life.

His teaching returned to holiness, union with God, the sacraments and the role of priests. The official sketch mentions trials of the foundations without detailing them. He died in Pianura on 2 August 1955.

The Vocationist community received diocesan approval in 1927 and pontifical recognition in 1947. Pope Francis canonized Russolillo on 15 May 2022. The congregations remain the clearest institutional expression of his concern for people discerning a religious calling.
