About Gregorio Grassi

Gregorio Grassi was an Italian Franciscan who took his religious name after entering the order as a young man. He prepared for the Chinese mission in Rome and left for China near the end of 1860. His work included responsibilities at an orphanage and seminary in Taiyuan.

He became a bishop and travelled to distant mission stations despite difficult roads, famine, and disease. His ministry ended in the violence at Taiyuan in 1900. He was killed there on 9 July. He was canonized in 2000 with the Chinese martyrs.
