Gummarus of Lier

About Gummarus of Lier
Gummarus is remembered in Lier, in present-day Belgium. The Roman Martyrology identifies him as a soldier devoted to God and says that he built an oratory there, where he was buried. A local October 11 feast preserves his association with the town. His name also appears as Gomer, Gommer, and Gommaire.
Much of the familiar story comes from a life written near the end of the eleventh century, long after the time in which Gummarus is placed. It describes service at Pepin's court, a difficult marriage, and a retreat to prayer. These episodes form part of the received local tradition; they cannot be treated as independently documented events in his life. Lier's heritage record likewise identifies Gummarus as important to local legend while distinguishing archaeological and documentary evidence from the later stories.
Even the chronology is unsettled. The current Martyrology's notice places his death around 775, whereas a local relic account describes transfers in 714 and 754, before that proposed death. The early dates cannot all be historical. The soundest profile records his Lier commemoration and the limits of the late life, while leaving exact birth and death dates open.
