About Humilis of Bisignano

Luca Antonio Pirozzo was born in Bisignano, Calabria, in 1582. He entered the Friars Minor novitiate at Mesoraca as a young adult and made religious profession in 1610, taking the name Humilis. A lay brother rather than a priest, he served through ordinary community duties, including collecting alms, helping at Mass, and tending the garden.

The Holy See's biography remembers Humilis for prayer, obedience, and care for people in need. It also preserves claims about unusual spiritual gifts. Those claims belong to the devotional record and are not needed to explain the documented shape of his Franciscan life. He spent time in Rome and Naples before returning to Calabria.

Humilis died at Bisignano on 26 November 1637. Pope John Paul II canonized him on 19 May 2002, describing him as a religious of the Order of Friars Minor. His story can be told through the community work and care for others that the sources describe, without treating later reports of miracles as independently established events.
