Justin of Chieti

About Justin of Chieti
Justin of Chieti is remembered through a longstanding local devotion rather than a detailed surviving life. The Catholic Church in Norway states that he has been honored at Chieti in Italy from time immemorial.
The same notice suggests that he may have been the city’s bishop, but does not establish that office securely.
The heading places his death around 540, while January 1 is listed as his commemoration. The account provides no further individual episodes.
The regional bishops' pastoral guide cautions that no sound historical documentation permits a detailed reconstruction of Justin's life. Much of the received story was collected in legends between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The guide also considers the Justins honored at Chieti, Aveia and Siponto to be one person, following the historian Francesco Lanzoni. This identification differs from treating every local title as a separate saint.
The same guide places its received evangelization narrative in the third or fourth century, while the Norwegian notice proposes a death around 540. These traditions cannot establish one precise personal chronology. The guide also explains the movement of Justin's local celebration from January 1 to January 14 and then to May 11.
