Liberalis of Treviso

About Liberalis of Treviso
Liberalis of Treviso is remembered as a lay Christian whose devotion was expressed in service to the poor and the sick. A diocesan account places him in the fourth century and associates him with Altino and the bishop Heliodorus.
The bishop's 2019 homily emphasizes that Liberalis was neither a bishop nor a martyr. It recalls a former soldier who became Christian and served others, while acknowledging the scarcity of historical documentation for a precise reconstruction of his life.
The fuller diocesan biography identifies its personal narrative as legend. It describes the later account of his retreat to Castrazone and death, but cautions that even the central episodes are difficult to establish historically.
His later local cult is clearer. The diocesan biography identifies him as patron of Treviso and Castelfranco Veneto and records his tomb in the cathedral crypt. His feast is celebrated on April 27.
