About Luis Obdulio Arroyo Navarro

Luis Obdulio Arroyo Navarro was a Guatemalan lay Catholic who made parish service part of his everyday life. From Quiriguá, he helped at Mass, prepared the Christmas nativity display and assisted with Holy Week celebrations. He encouraged his family to participate in prayer and parish activities. His work as a municipal driver in Los Amates also gave him a practical way to help missionaries reach outlying communities.

Born in Quiriguá in 1950, Arroyo joined the Franciscan Third Order as a young adult. The Franciscan order records that he became a parish catechist. This was a lay vocation, distinct from the priestly ministry of Tullio Maruzzo, the Franciscan missionary with whom he worked.

The homily at their beatification recalled more than their final journey together. Witnesses remembered Arroyo transporting injured people and women in labor to hospital, making electrical and mechanical repairs, and driving priests and sisters to distant villages. It also identified his participation in the Cursillos de Cristiandad movement.

As threats against Maruzzo increased, Arroyo’s family urged him to stop accompanying the priests. The Dicastery’s biography recounts that he continued the service he had voluntarily undertaken. He was killed with Maruzzo on July 1, 1981, while returning from pastoral work. They were beatified together on October 27, 2018. The Catholic Church remembers Arroyo as a blessed martyr whose practical skills supported the religious life of his community.
