About Luxorius

Pope Gregory I's letter to Januarius, bishop of Cagliari, refers in 599 to an abbess of the monastery of Saints Gavinus and Luxorius. This is contemporary evidence that Luxorius was venerated under that name in a Cagliari monastic dedication by the late sixth century. The letter does not describe Luxorius's life or explain the foundation's origins.Martyrological sources associate Luxorius with Sardinia and August 21, though the forms of his name and the names of companions vary among witnesses. The Roman Martyrology's later entry commemorates him with Cisellus and Camerinus and assigns their deaths to the persecution of Diocletian under Delphius. The medieval Passion tells a fuller story, but its surviving manuscripts are later and textually unstable. Modern scholarship therefore treats its biographical details cautiously. No reliable birth or death date, personal birthplace, or precise execution site is established by the evidence summarized here.
