Biography
Marcellinus of Rome

About Marcellinus of Rome
Marcellinus became bishop of Rome in 296 and remained in office until 304. The Vatican's register names Rome as his birthplace, but supplies no birth date.
One surviving glimpse of his leadership comes from a burial chamber rather than a record of public speeches. An inscription from the Catacomb of Callistus names the deacon Severus, who prepared a double chamber for himself and his family with Marcellinus's authorization. Its remembrance of the young Severa looks forward to resurrection, placing a family's grief within its Christian hope. Marcellinus appears here in the practical work of a community making provision for its dead.
Persecution overtook that community during his episcopate. Eusebius names Marcellinus as the successor of Caius and briefly states that the persecution reached him. He gives no account there of an execution or of a public renunciation of Christianity.
Later Christians disagreed sharply about what had happened. In the controversy preserved in Augustine's Answer to Petilian, Petilian accused Marcellinus of escaping death by taking part in the burning of incense. The accusation appears within an argument against the Catholic party, not as Marcellinus's own testimony.
The received Orthodox life tells a story of failure followed by repentance. It describes Marcellinus regretting his sacrifice to idols, returning to the emperor, and accepting execution with three companions. Its message concerns a return to faith after fear, but its dramatic scenes belong to later hagiography.
The surviving evidence does not settle either the alleged lapse or the manner of his death. Kirsch's historical study rejects the supposed proceedings of the council at Sinuessa as spurious and notes the uncertainty of the death day. Marcellinus was buried in the Catacomb of Priscilla, where later pilgrims remembered his tomb. His legacy joins the small, tangible record of a bishop's care for burial with a much more disputed story of persecution and repentance.
