About Marcian of Tortona

Marcian of Tortona is venerated as an early bishop and martyr. His received title of first bishop rests on tradition rather than a secure contemporary biography.

The Norwegian church account preserves a story of conversion, episcopal service, imprisonment and martyrdom. It also points out chronological difficulties, including a connection with Syrus of Pavia, who lived much later than the first-century setting assigned to Marcian.

The same account notes that eighth-century texts mentioning Marcian do not call him a bishop. It associates an explicit first-bishop identification with Walafrid Strabo in the ninth century. Competing accounts differ about both the year and manner of his death.

In 2022, the Diocese of Tortona celebrated 1900 years from the traditional date of his martyrdom. Its account describes his enduring role as patron and first evangelizer, while explicitly identifying the account of his arrival at Dertona as tradition.
