About Nelson Rutilio Lemus

Nelson Rutilio Lemus was a Salvadoran schoolboy whose friendship with Rutilio Grande brought him into the priest’s parish work. He grew up in El Paisnal and was studying in seventh grade at the Centro Escolar 1 de Julio. His sister Dinora remembered a patient, resourceful brother who took his schoolwork seriously.

The same interview preserves a practical example of his help at home. When Dinora sold food their mother had prepared, Nelson accompanied her and handled the change because she found the arithmetic difficult. They also played together and gathered firewood.

In another interview, Dinora recalled how he joined his sisters’ pretend cooking games, using leaves as money to buy something from each of them. He enjoyed football, spinning tops and flying kites, and would carry younger children on his shoulders. These recollections preserve the ordinary activities of a teenager whom his family would later remember as a martyr.

Nelson was killed with Grande and Manuel Solórzano at Las Tres Cruces on March 12, 1977.

At the funeral in San Salvador’s cathedral, Archbishop Óscar Romero spoke of all three dead men together. His homily of March 14, 1977, presented the priest and his two companions as a sign of the Church’s solidarity with the people it served. He asked the mourners to reject revenge while insisting that love did not dispense with justice. The authorities, he said, had a responsibility to investigate the crime impartially. His words record the Church’s immediate response to their deaths; they do not supply an eyewitness reconstruction of the attack.

His sister Cecilia was a small child when the family learned of his death. Speaking at the 2022 beatification, she recalled the shock of that news and the crowd around the coffins at the parish. She described the Church’s recognition of her brother as a privilege for the family, while expressing hope that the celebration would encourage people to follow the martyrs’ example.

Lemus, Grande, Solórzano and Cosme Spessotto were beatified in San Salvador on January 22, 2022. Cardinal Gregorio Rosa Chávez’s homily placed the two laymen alongside the many unnamed victims of violence, calling the Church to preserve their memory.
