Orientius

About Orientius
An older Roman martyrology remembers Orientius as a bishop at Auch in southwestern Gaul. It lists him on May 1 and supplies no dates or account of his work. The same page names a different Orentius with Patience at Huesca; the two names must not be collapsed into one person.
Later writing gave the bishop a fuller story. Lucie Martin's review of the Lives describes a reported diplomatic mission during the conflict between Visigoths and Romans in 439. Because the account is hagiographic and its details are disputed as historical evidence, the mission cannot be entered here as a verified episode. A medieval charter preserved by the TELMA historical text database records the later Saint-Orens church and burial tradition at Auch. That is evidence for the continuing local cult, not proof of the earlier narrative's details.
The name Orientius also belongs to the poet of the Latin Commonitorium. Older scholarship often identified that poet with the bishop, but a recent dissertation notes the absence of ancient testimony or manuscript evidence making the link explicit. This profile therefore remembers a bishop and his cult at Auch without treating the poem as his established work. His life dates and places beyond the episcopal association remain unknown.
