About Peter Sanz

Peter Sanz was a Spanish Dominican who volunteered for missionary work in China. After preparation in Manila, he entered Fujian in 1714 and served Catholic communities there for decades. He became an apostolic vicar and bishop, combining pastoral responsibilities with travel between scattered communities.

Periods of persecution forced him into exile in Macao and into hiding in Christian households. He was imprisoned in 1746 with other Dominican missionaries. The church biography records his execution at Fuzhou the following year. His story belongs to the early Catholic mission in Fujian and the people who sheltered its clergy.
