Portrait of Prisca

About Prisca

Prisca is venerated as a Roman martyr. The church of Santa Prisca on the Aventine is dedicated to her and preserves a longstanding local cult. The available evidence used here does not establish her date, age, family, or the circumstances of her death.

A later Passion, reported by the church’s historical account, describes a thirteen-year-old girl who refused to worship Apollo and was put to death. Because this narrative is hagiographic and not independently corroborated by the early evidence cited here, it is treated as tradition rather than biography.
