About Processus

Processus and Martinian are early Roman martyrs whose names appear in the Martyrologium Hieronymianum. A manuscript of that martyrology locates their burial at the second milestone of the Via Aurelia, and old catalogues of Roman martyr graves also record them there. Their public veneration in Rome is attested from at least the fourth century, although their dates and circumstances of death are not known.

A later legend identifies the pair as keepers of the prison where Peter and Paul were held. The historical evidence does not establish that role, so it is not included as fact. The responsible account is therefore brief: it records their early cult and burial tradition while leaving their personal histories unknown.
