About Protus

Protus is remembered with Hyacinth in the early Roman cult of martyrs. The fourth-century Roman calendar records their commemoration on September 11, and an ancient burial tradition places them on the Via Salaria. These early witnesses support the existence of their cult, but do not verify the detailed later account of their deaths. The grave of Hyacinth was discovered in 1845; that archaeological finding is not independent proof of every traditional detail about Protus.
