About Quadratus of Athens

Quadratus is remembered for an early written defense of Christianity addressed to the emperor Hadrian. Eusebius reports that the work answered attacks on Christians and was still circulating among readers in his own time. The apologist's life is much less fully preserved than that brief record of his work.

The Catholic Encyclopedia places the appeal during Hadrian's visit to Athens in 124 or 125. That dating is an historical reconstruction, not a surviving date supplied by Quadratus. Only a short passage from the defense is preserved in Eusebius.

In that passage, Quadratus says that some people healed or raised by Jesus remained alive into his own time. The fragment does not name them or say that Quadratus himself witnessed their healing. It preserves his appeal to continuing human testimony, rather than a list of independently identifiable witnesses.

Later accounts give the name a fuller story. Jerome identifies Quadratus as a successor to the martyred bishop Publius and describes him gathering the frightened Athenian church again. He also associates this bishop with the defense presented to Hadrian. This is Jerome's identification, not information independently supplied by the surviving fragment.

The New Schaff-Herzog Encyclopedia warns that the chronology works against equating the apologist with that bishop. It places the two notices in different imperial settings. Their shared name should therefore not turn the bishop's career into an established biography of the earlier writer.

The Orthodox Church in America preserves a received account of Quadratus as an apostle and bishop who died after imprisonment. Its September commemoration belongs to that liturgical tradition. Such remembrance is distinct from the limited historical record of the apologist. His enduring place in early Christian literature rests on the defense he wrote and the small portion that later readers preserved.
