Ramón Vargas González

About Ramón Vargas González
Ramón Vargas González was a medical student and Catholic youth association member in Guadalajara. He was born in Ahualulco de Mercado, Jalisco, on January 22, 1905.
The diocesan biography presents his choice of medicine as following his father’s profession. It remembers him as sociable and good-humored, with red hair that earned him the nickname Colorado.
Before medical school, he studied at the Escuela Preparatoria de Jalisco, completing secondary and preparatory courses. He entered medical school in 1923. The University of Guadalajara’s biography remembers his care for poor patients during his studies. It draws on later family testimony for an account of his refusal to join armed activity, describing his wish to continue medicine. That recollection presents his service to patients within the wider conflict over religious life.
When police raided the family home in April 1927, Anacleto González Flores was staying there. The university account describes Ramón returning to his detained relatives after briefly reaching the street.
Ramón was imprisoned with his brothers Jorge and Florentino. According to the diocesan account, he encouraged Jorge and intervened so that Florentino would be spared. The account identifies Ramón as the youngest of the three.
He and Jorge were shot on April 1, 1927.
Ramón was beatified in Guadalajara on November 20, 2005.
In May 2024, Ahualulco commemorated the seventy-fifth anniversary of the return of the brothers’ remains. The local celebration included an exhibition about them and the presentation of a biography.
