Severus of Barcelona

About Severus of Barcelona

Severus is venerated at Barcelona as a bishop and martyr. The archdiocese’s own historical account states that reliable historical testimony about him is lacking, despite a popular tradition maintained for centuries.

The later stories disagree about when he lived. Carme Arronis Llopis’s study traces versions placing him in different centuries and shows how the medieval account borrowed episodes from Severus of Ravenna. The Barcelona story made him a linen weaver with a wife and daughter, chosen as bishop after a dove descended upon him. These are elements of the transmitted legend, not an established personal history.

The same narrative portrays Severus meeting his pursuers openly and enduring martyrdom with companions. Early modern hagiographers tried to revise the contradictory material, but the familiar medieval image remained influential among devotees.

His later cult is more clearly documented. The Archdiocese of Tarragona records that relics venerated at Sant Cugat del Vallès were transferred in part to Barcelona Cathedral on 3 August 1405 at the request of King Martin. It associates the transfer with authorization from Benedict XIII.

Barcelona Cathedral continues to celebrate him on 6 November. Its notice describes a corporate visit to the saint’s altar after Mass and explicitly names him secondary patron of the Archdiocese of Barcelona.
