About Theodore Stratelates
Theodore Stratelates is venerated in Eastern Christian calendars as a Great Martyr and is commemorated by the Orthodox Church in America on February 8. The OCA life calls him “the General” and recounts a received tradition in which he came from Euchaita in Asia Minor and held military command at Heraclea. It says that he used this position to preach Christianity and that he was eventually martyred. The narrative includes miraculous and dramatic elements; they are part of the hagiographic tradition, not independently established historical events.Theodore the General is distinct from Theodore the Recruit (Theodore Teron). John Haldon’s scholarly study examines the two martyr traditions side by side, a useful safeguard against merging their narratives. The sources reviewed do not establish Theodore Stratelates’s birth or death year, precise historical itinerary, or appearance. February 8 is recorded as the Eastern Christian commemoration rather than as a substantiated death date.
