About Theodore the Studite

Theodore the Studite was a Byzantine monk and abbot associated with the Studion monastery at Constantinople. The Orthodox Church in America gives his birth as 758 and identifies his parents as Photinus and Theoctiste; these biographical particulars belong to the transmitted life and should not be treated as independently corroborated in every detail. After entering monastic life, Theodore became abbot and developed the Studion community. His surviving testament for the monastery offers direct evidence for its expected discipline and governance.During the ninth-century disputes over icons and imperial authority, Theodore defended the veneration of images and criticized rulers who sought to impose iconoclast policy. His letters and theological works are primary evidence for his positions. The OCA life recounts episodes of exile and imprisonment and places his death in 826; those details should be cited to the transmitted life, with the narrative’s religious perspective made clear. The OCA commemorates Theodore on November 11 and marks the translation of his relics on January 26. The two calendar observances are distinct from one another and neither is used as a substitute for an unknown life date. No verified physical description or likeness is available in the sources reviewed.
