Portrait of Vladimir the Great

About Vladimir the Great

Vladimir governed from Kyiv. The Russian Primary Chronicle, compiled in Kyiv around 1113 from earlier materials, narrates his Christianization more than a century after the events it describes. It is a medieval account of Vladimir and the community's origin story, not a verbatim record of private motives or dialogue. The Chronicle situates the ruler amid political and religious relations with neighboring peoples and the Byzantine Empire. In the Chronicle's account, Vladimir convenes advisers after delegations present different religions. He sends envoys to observe religious rites, and the narrative gives special weight to their report about worship at Constantinople. These speeches and set pieces reveal how the chronicler explained the ruler's choice; the text does not independently verify that the reported dialogue occurred exactly as written. It then connects Vladimir's baptism with an alliance and marriage involving the Byzantine imperial family, while also preserving disagreements about where the baptism took place. The chronicle describes Vladimir's return to Kyiv, the removal of cult images, and a mass baptism in the Dnieper. It goes on to say that he established churches and priests and sent children of prominent families for instruction. These scenes express the chronicle's account of a public religious transition; they do not establish that conversion was instantaneous or uniform across all the territories later associated with Rus. The source itself narrates resistance and prolonged religious change beyond Kyiv.Later Orthodox memory honors Vladimir as an evangelizer and commemorates him on July 15. The Orthodox Church in America gives his death as 1015 at Berestov, near Kyiv, and identifies his burial with the Church of the Tithes. Those details belong to the church's received biography and should not be confused with the older chronicle's literary conversion scenes.
