About Zephaniah
Zephaniah is known chiefly through the short biblical book bearing his name. The Catholic Encyclopedia identifies Jerusalem as the setting of his activity and places him among the twelve Minor Prophets.
The book's title places his ministry in the reign of Josiah, king of Judah, from 640 to 609 BC. The introduction published by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops suggests an early setting within that reign, before Josiah's religious reforms. This setting remains approximate.
His prophecy confronts worship of other gods and the abuse of authority. The day of divine judgment appears as darkness and devastation, threatening a society that has allowed injustice to become ordinary. Yet the book does not end with destruction: its final section turns toward the restoration of Jerusalem.
In the second chapter, the humble are urged to seek justice rather than assume that safety is guaranteed. The warning extends beyond Judah to neighboring peoples and to Assyria. These are prophetic addresses to nations, not a record of journeys that Zephaniah made through them.
Later Christian remembrance adds details not supplied by the book's brief personal introduction. The Orthodox Church in America describes him as belonging to Simeon and living at court, where he helped Josiah oppose idol worship. Those details belong to received tradition and should not be treated as independently documented episodes.
His ancestry has also invited speculation. The Catholic Encyclopedia discusses the suggestion that the Hezekiah named in his genealogy was the king, but notes that the title king is absent there. A royal family connection therefore cannot simply be assumed. The prophet's surviving words are more accessible than a continuous account of his life.
The Orthodox Church in America commemorates Zephaniah on December 3. Its liturgical remembrance honors a prophet whose warning calls people toward repentance. The commemoration preserves his place in Christian worship without establishing a historical anniversary of his death.
