About Aberoh and Atom

Aberoh and Atom are remembered together as martyrs in the Ethiopian Synaxarium.

The Coptic Encyclopedia identifies Piroou and Athom with the name forms Abiruh or Piru and Atom.

Their story survives through several languages and versions. L. R. Frangulyan’s scholarly account identifies a Bohairic Coptic manuscript in the Vatican Library, probably copied in the ninth or tenth century. On stylistic grounds, she places the surviving form of its narrative earlier, probably in the seventh or eighth century. Both estimates concern the transmission of the story, not securely dated events in the brothers’ lives.

The Coptic manuscript divides the martyrdom into three parts. Frangulyan also identifies later Arabic witnesses and shorter accounts in the medieval Coptic-Arabic and Ethiopian Synaxaria. This explains why parallel accounts can preserve the same pair while differing in details. The tradition is not a set of independent contemporary testimonies.

Delehaye’s critical calendar records Piroou and Athom at Baramoun and places their burial at Sammanoud beside Anianus. These are received geographical traditions; the differing accounts do not establish a single secure itinerary.
