About Abramius the Lover of Labor of the Kiev Caves

Abramius is remembered for work in support of the Kiev Caves brotherhood. The Orthodox Church in America's notice explicitly warns that scarce written records make his chronology difficult to establish. It cites the seventeenth-century Teraturgim of Athanasius and later ecclesiastical writers who remember him as an elder devoted to work. The account attributed to Archbishop Philaret describes prayer in a cave followed by labor to provide for the community. Estimates of his lifetime vary: one places him in the twelfth or thirteenth century, while another favors the later thirteenth or early fourteenth century. No single year is selected from these differing proposals. His relics are associated with the Near Caves of Anthony. His August observance coincides with that of Abraham of Smolensk, a distinct saint whose identity is not merged with his.
