Adolphus Mukasa Ludigo

About Adolphus Mukasa Ludigo
The Namugongo shrine remembers Ludigo’s work in the royal gardens.
The archdiocese remembers his willingness to cook for other Christians.
He was burned at Namugongo on 3 June 1886. The historical concordance published by H. B. Thomas in 1951 identifies him as Ludigo in Apolo Kagwa’s Basekabaka, Adulufu Ludigo in Ebika, and Adolphus Mukasa Ludigo in J. P. Thoonen’s study. These differing forms help distinguish him from other martyrs who also bore the name Mukasa.
Thomas also recorded disagreement among early reports about the exact date of the Namugongo executions. He preferred 3 June after comparing the evidence, rather than simply adopting the dates reported by missionaries who had received news indirectly. That discussion cautions against treating every early report as direct observation. His table gives Ludigo’s death as 3 June.
Paul VI canonized Ludigo and his companions on 18 October 1964. Their annual Catholic commemoration is 3 June.
