Portrait of Ælfwold II of Sherborne

About Ælfwold II of Sherborne

Ælfwold was a monk of Winchester before becoming bishop of Sherborne in 1045. He succeeded his brother Brightwy.

William of Malmesbury’s account remembers his restrained way of life. He was devoted to Swithun and visited Cuthbert’s shrine at Durham.

The received account says he died while singing an antiphon of Cuthbert. The Norwegian church biography gives his death as 25 March 1058.

The surviving biographical notice preserves only a small number of details about his life. After his death, the see of Sherborne was joined to Ramsbury.
