Agapitus of Rome

Portrait of Agapitus of Rome

About Agapitus of Rome

Agapitus is remembered as a young Christian martyr of Praeneste, now Palestrina, outside Rome. The Vatican City State's account acknowledges how little is known of him, while pointing to ancient liturgical remembrance and the remains of a basilica bearing his name. His enduring place in the city's worship is clearer than the details of his childhood.

The diocese's later passion tells of a young man who refused to sacrifice to the gods despite threats and punishment. It describes miraculous deliverance from torture before his execution. The same diocesan history explains that this largely imaginative narrative was composed many centuries later, around the ninth century or the year 1000, from scant historical information.

A modern Vatican account repeats the traditional year 274 and describes death by beheading. Its stories of noble birth, arrest at about fifteen and beasts that would not attack him belong to that devotional tradition, rather than a surviving contemporary report.

On 15 August 2023, the diocese announced an anniversary year, with an opening Mass and procession planned for two days later. Its stated purpose was to renew Christian witness through the memory of its patron and the example of present-day martyrs. The announcement also made provision for sick, elderly and imprisoned people unable to visit the cathedral. This modern program shows a community continuing to draw spiritual encouragement from Agapitus's memory; it does not establish the details of his ancient trial.
