About Agilulfus of Cologne

Agilulfus, also called Agilolf, was bishop of Cologne in the eighth century. Jennifer Striewski’s account for the Rhineland regional history portal places his appointment around 746 or 747 and his death after 748 but before 753. Little is securely known about his early life. These limits do not support an exact birth or death date.

An early document identifies him among the Frankish bishops addressed by Pope Zacharias. In the letter edited as number 82 in the Boniface correspondence, the pope thanks the recipients for their commitment to unity and directs them to cooperate with Boniface. Michael Tangl dates the undated letter by comparison with another letter to 1 May 748. This establishes Agilolf’s episcopal identity within that church network.

His later reputation became entangled with another Agilolf. Cologne Cathedral’s account explains that monks of Malmedy presented relics of a saint whom they described as an abbot, later bishop and martyr. Archbishop Anno arranged their transfer to Cologne on 9 July 1062. The cathedral explicitly rejects the identification of that abbot with the similarly named bishop of Cologne. The martyr story and the relics should therefore not be treated as secure facts about this bishop’s life.

The shrine nevertheless records a long history of veneration under the bishop’s identity. The cathedral notes that the relics continued to be honored as his into the nineteenth century. Its present reliquary was made in 1914 and has stood beside the Agilolphus altar since 2012. Those dates describe the memorial’s history, rather than episodes in the eighth-century bishop’s career.

The Archdiocese of Cologne’s 2025 liturgical directory lists Saint Agilolf, bishop of Cologne, on 9 July as an optional memorial. That official observance supports his place in the local Catholic calendar, while leaving the disputed martyr tradition separate from his documented episcopal identity.
