Alban of Mainz

About Alban of Mainz
The evidence for Alban of Mainz is sparse and comes through a developing hagiographic tradition. The New Schaff-Herzog Encyclopedia explicitly describes his existence as somewhat doubtful. It points to Rabanus Maurus’s Martyrology as the oldest surviving form of the story, rather than presenting it as a contemporary account. This critical distinction matters because other saints named Alban have separate traditions; their lives and attributes should not be merged with the Mainz figure. In that version, Ambrose sends Alban from Milan to preach in Gaul during Theodosius I’s reign, and Alban is beheaded at Mainz on the way. These details are reported as the martyrology’s tradition, not as independently corroborated events. The reference article identifies a fourth- or fifth-century setting only as an allegation; no precise year or additional episode is warranted by the evidence consulted.
