Albinus of Angers

Portrait of Albinus of Angers

About Albinus of Angers

Albinus of Angers, known in French as Aubin, is remembered through a life written by Venantius Fortunatus. The work is conventionally identified as BHL 234. A modern study places its composition within the episcopate of Dominianus of Angers, who died between 569 and 572, providing a late sixth-century setting for the text. Because the Vita is hagiography, its portrait of Albinus’s conduct and miracles should be read as the account of its author, not as a neutral contemporary dossier. The Vita presents Albinus as bishop of Angers and relates episodes from his ministry. Its existence and transmission are independently represented in scholarly discussions of Fortunatus’s works, while individual miracle episodes remain claims of the hagiographic narrative. The sources do not establish a precise birth or death year. His feast is observed on March 1 in the Roman calendar.
