Alexander of Lyons

Portrait of Alexander of Lyons

About Alexander of Lyons

Alexander was a Phrygian physician in Gaul. The account describes his encouragement of Christians at their tribunal, his confession and condemnation.

He entered the arena with Attalus. Both were tortured and killed. The narrator remembers Alexander as silent and turning inwardly to God.

The source itself requires a distinction between the events and their transmission. Oxford’s Cult of Saints in Late Antiquity project explains that the letter from the churches of Lyon and Vienne survives through partial quotation in Eusebius’s Church History. A fuller version once belonged to his lost collection of martyrdom accounts. The surviving text therefore preserves early testimony through a later historian’s selection, rather than giving readers the complete original letter.

Oxford’s commentary dates the persecution conventionally to 177, following Eusebius’s chronology, while noting that the quoted passages do not explain how he reached that date. It also examines the community’s distinction between living confessors and those whose witness had ended in death. These observations help place Alexander within a larger account of Christians supporting one another during persecution. They do not supply an exact birthday, a full medical career or a precise execution day.

His Catholic remembrance belongs to the martyrs of Lyon and Vienne. The Catholic Church in Norway includes the physician Alexander in its list of that group and gives their commemoration as 2 June. This is a day of collective remembrance, not an independently established date for his death.

The observance continues in Lyon. In 2026, the parish of Saint Pothin announced its 2 June celebration of Pothin with the other Christian martyrs of the city, including a Mass and procession. Such community remembrance carries their witness forward without providing missing details about each person’s life.
