About Alkmund of Derby

Alkmund of Derby is remembered as a royal saint whose life ended in the dynastic conflicts of Northumbria. The chronicle known as Historia Regum places his death in the annal for 800. It identifies him, with a qualification, as a son of King Alcred. It says he was seized by King Eardwulf’s guardians and killed on that king’s order with the companions of his flight. The brief entry gives no place of death and little about Alkmund’s own actions.

The University of Glasgow’s Saints in Scottish Place-Names identifies him as Ealhmund of Derby, a son of Alhred of Northumbria, and lists Alkmund and Alhmund as other forms of his name. Its entry associates his remembrance with Lilleshall and Derby. These names help distinguish the royal layman from Alchmund, the bishop of Hexham, who appears elsewhere in the same chronicle.

A decorated stone sarcophagus found during excavation at Derby’s St Alkmund’s church has often been associated with him. The Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Stone Sculpture records its discovery beneath a later medieval floor in 1967–1968. It describes carving on all sides, suggesting that the monument was meant to be seen.

The catalogue also sets a clear limit on the attribution: no evidence links the sarcophagus to a particular individual. It considers a connection with Alkmund’s shrine possible, but dates the object probably to the tenth century. The stone is therefore evidence of an important burial monument, not proof that its original occupant was Alkmund. Its survival preserves part of Derby’s early medieval religious setting.

His veneration continues in distinct church observances. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Nottingham’s 2025–2026 directory permits a commemoration of Saint Alcmund, martyr, on 20 March. Shrewsbury Orthodox Church explicitly commemorates Saint Alchmund of Derby on 19 March. These local calendars establish his remembrance as a saint; they do not supply an exact anniversary for the killing described by the annal.
