Ambrose Kibuuka

About Ambrose Kibuuka
Ambrose Kibuuka was a young Buganda court page. Paul VI’s account remembers his upright conduct and cheerful courage before his death at Namugongo on 3 June 1886.
The archdiocese remembers his baptism on 16 November 1885, administered by Mapeera.
Names in the surviving historical accounts vary. H. B. Thomas’s concordance identifies Ambrose Kibuka in Thoonen’s study and Amburoziyo Kibuka in Apolo Kagwa’s Ebika. Thomas notes his omission from Kagwa’s Basekabaka. That absence in one list does not erase the recognition in the other accounts.
His name also requires care. Historian Alison Bennett’s study of a Kibuuka shrine concerns the Ganda war deity and the objects associated with that figure, rather than this Christian martyr. She describes a religious world in which local shrines, royal authority and arriving Muslim and Christian communities interacted. Her account provides context for the changing religious life of Buganda; the deity’s relics should not be attributed to Ambrose.
