About Anastasius of Suppentonia

Gregory says Anastasius had served as a notary of the Roman Church before leaving that office for monastic life. He lived for many years at the monastery of Suppentonia, near Nepi, and governed it. Gregory presents the account as information received from people who knew the community, including the monk Laurio and Bishop Maximian of Syracuse. The text offers no year of birth and does not provide an independently verifiable date of death. In Gregory's story, a voice called Anastasius and the members of his community from a rock above them; the abbot and monks died one after another during the next several days. The story explains the community's memory of its abbot, but its supernatural details belong to Gregory's religious narrative. The Roman Martyrology later commemorates the abbot and companions on January 11. No exact lifespan or birthplace is established by these sources.
