About Aniceto Adolfo

Aniceto Adolfo was born as Manuel Seco Gutiérrez at Celada Marlantes on 4 October 1912.

He trained as a Lasallian teacher and worked in Valladolid before joining the community at Turón.

He was the youngest brother among the religious executed at Turón’s cemetery on 9 October 1934 during the Asturian rising.

Their deaths also acquired a political afterlife. In his study of commemorative imagery, historian Brian D. Bunk examines how conservative writers used the Turón martyrs’ stories to mobilize political support and justify violent reaction. His analysis concerns later representations of the victims; it does not establish Aniceto’s personal political intentions.

John Paul II canonized him with his companions on 21 November 1999. In the homily, the pope remembered the brothers as educators whose prayer and fraternity continued into their final suffering. Their Lasallian memorial falls on 9 October.
